The story makes the song better!

In tomorrow morning’s Lord’s Day Gathering at Calvary, our worship in music will focus on Christ our Redeemer. One hymn we will sing is Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing, by Robert Robinson (1735-1790).  Do you want to know a little about this man and why he wrote “Praise the mount! [speaking of Mount Calvary, where our Savior died in our place] I’m fixed upon it, Mount of Thy redeeming love?”

Read this synopsis of his life here.

Then watch this video, a modern depiction of Robinson’s story here.

  1. Pastor Taylor, I had new understanding of this song when I taught the Names of God study earlier this year. I found it interesting that it was the one thing I never understood when singing COME THOU FOUNT OF EVERY BLESSING. I finally understood the part in the song “Here I raise my Ebenezer”…..understanding makes all the difference! Tessa

    Jehovah Ezer: (Ebenezer): The Lord is our helper

    Our soul waits for the LORD. He is our help (Jehovah ‘Ezer) and our shield.” (Psalm 33:20)

    The LORD (Jehovah) is for me (KJV = “on my side”); I will not fear. What can man do to me?

    Ps 56:4
    In God (I will praise His word),
    In God I have put my trust;
    I will not fear.
    What can flesh do to me?

    Isa 41:10
    Fear not, for I am with you;
    Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
    I will strengthen you,
    Yes, I will help you,
    I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’

    Romans 8:31
    What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

    I found this quote:
    “Do we not find God doing this in our own diaries? Surely in these modern pages we may discover some happy incidents, refreshing to ourselves and glorifying to our God.
    Have you had no deliverances?
    Have you passed through no rivers, supported by the Divine Presence?
    Have you walked through no fires unharmed?
    Have you not been helped in trouble? Has Jehovah not helped you?
    The Angel that wrestled with Jacob at Peniel, has He never wrestled with you?
    He that stood in the fiery furnace with the three holy children, hath He never trodden the coals at your side?
    O beloved, He has manifested Himself unto us as He doth not unto the world.”

    COME THOU FOUNT OF EVERY BLESSING
    Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
    Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
    Call for songs of loudest praise.
    Teach me some melodious sonnet,
    Sung by flaming tongues above.
    Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it,
    Mount of Thy redeeming love.

    Sorrowing I shall be in spirit,
    Till released from flesh and sin,
    Yet from what I do inherit,
    Here Thy praises I’ll begin;
    Here I raise my Ebenezer;
    Here by Thy great help I’ve come;
    And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,
    Safely to arrive at home.
